The 2020 Tokyo Olympic games were postponed to the summer of 2020 in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
This decision was made by the International Olympics Committee and Japanese organizers.

The games, which were originally scheduled from July 24 to Aug. 9 in the year of 2020, were rescheduled to occur from July 23 to Aug. 8, 2020. The Paralympics were moved to Aug. 24 through Sept. 5. All of the athletes that had already qualified will not have to re-qualify.

Officials made the decision in accordance with health guidelines, the interests of the athletes and Olympics, and the global sports calendar.

In a press release released on Olympics.org, the IOC President Thomas Bach urged the world to stay positive.

“With this announcement, I am confident that, working together with the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the Japanese Government and all our stakeholders, we can master this unprecedented challenge. Humankind currently finds itself in a dark tunnel. These Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 can be a light at the end of this tunnel,” Bach said.
