DreamWorks released their first trailer of the ‘Shrek 5’ movie February 27. The new animation style featured in the trailer has become a point of contention online.

I think that the new animation style is a big improvement from the previous ‘Shrek’ movies. People who are hating on the new style are blinded by nostalgia. Looking back on the older ‘Shrek’ movies, the original animation style was iconic but ugly.

Even with the animation style change, the base designs of the characters did not change very much. The general atmosphere of the new animation is similar to the animation of the older movies in my opinion.

The last movie in the ‘Shrek’ series, ‘Shrek Forever After,’ was released in 2010 according to IMDB. There were bound to be differences in the animation between these two movies due to the time that has passed. Even then, the general designs of the characters weren’t exactly changed, and any changes could be explained by the change in the style and animation.

Dreamworks is also most likely aiming to appeal to newer, younger audiences as well as older audiences with the new ‘Shrek’ movie. Which means that this could be another explanation for the change in animation style.

Another movie series by Dreamworks in the ‘Shrek Cinematic Universe’ as I like to call it, ‘Puss in Boots,’ also had a big change in its animation style between the first movie and the most recent movie, ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.’ The new animation style was praised by its audience and the movie was given a 95% score by critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

I believe that the new animation in the new ‘Shrek’ movie will improve the movie like what happened with ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.’ I think that people should give the new ‘Shrek’ movie a chance and not base all their opinions of it on a trailer that is less than two minutes long.
