On August 13, Westerville North hosted Freshman First Day. “Link crew is here to help the freshman have junior and senior buddies and see North without all the other grades,” Jahzara Purvis (‘27) said.
As Link Crew leaders (LCL) got to know the freshman they said some fun things about them. “[This group of] freshmen are shy, nice, outgoing,” Gabby Connor (‘29) said.
When looking into the classrooms early that day LCL were playing games, breaking the awkward first day ice.
The Class of 2029 came in excited to: “[Meet] new people,” Edward Maksem (‘29) said. “[I’m ready for] football games and the social aspect,” Aubree Gulliams (‘29) said. “[I’m looking forward to] the sports, because in middle school the sports weren’t good,” JT Hageman (‘29) said.
Some of the LCL have to manage academics and additional clubs or athletics. “[I have to set] aside time after school to focus on school work,” Reagan Niederkohr (‘27) said.
New Warriors have already, “heard about the basketball state championship and very good academics,” Max Crites (‘29) said.
Michaela Baum has been in charge of Link Crew for two years and has helped the group evolve and improve.
“The [LCL advisers] sat down and talked about what works and what doesn’t work, then create[d] a plan,” Michaela Baum said. “Now advisers involve student leaders and have more practice than previous years.”
Baum’s first year ended with a corny song. She felt like it wasn’t the best way to get through to the freshman that high school is about going with the flow.
