Winter formal excites students

On October 22nd the junior class officers tweeted that Westerville North is officially having a Winter Formal this year. The junior class officers proposed the idea to the administration, and now there proposal is soon going to become reality.

The last time Westerville North hosted a Winter Formal was in 2016, and now this school year students finally have the option to attend one.

Maddy Hinz, who graduated from Westerville North in 2019, attended Winter Formal her freshman year.

“My Winter Formal experience was very fun, I loved dressing up and going out with my friends. I was able to hang out with people I don’t normally hang out with outside of school.

“But it wasn’t nearly as popular as Homecoming. They announced the dance only three weeks before the date and it was mostly underclassmen who attended.”  Hinz said.

The declaration of Winter Formal was announced much earlier this year, so hopefully this year the turn out will be better.

The idea behind restarting the tradition of Winter Formal was inspired by Westerville Central. Central has a Winter Formal every year and Junior class officer, Jake Gooding, had the opportunity to attend one of their dances.

“Central’s Winter Formal was a blast, the turnout was great and was very similar to Homecoming. They had a DJ, fun lights, decorations, and the dance floor was packed,” Gooding said.

After going to Centrals formal and having a good time, Gooding and the other class officers decided to come up with a proposal to have a Winter Formal at North. They presented there idea during an administrative meeting, in which the staff said yes.

Westerville North students are excited about this event including freshman Abby Fassel.

“I’m very excited to go to my first Winter Formal. I had so much fun at Homecoming and I’m hoping this dance will be just as fun, if not more fun,” Fassel said.

Senior Mcrandy Achia has never been to a Winter Formal before.

“I’ve never been to a Winter Formal before, and I’m happy they decided to have one of my last year of high school. I know people who go to Central and i know they had fun there’s. I’ll definitely be going to Norths,” Achia said.

According to the school’s librarian, Beth Baryon, the Winter Formal will be similar to homecoming.

“This dance should be a lot like Homecoming. Students will still have to pay for tickets online and the same DJ company from Homecoming will be their. The only thing different from Homecoming is that students will be able to line up inside the building instead of outside in the cold and all students will be required to wear closed toe shoes in to the dance,” Baryon said.

Due to many foot injuries at Homecoming, students must wear some form of close toed shoes or they will not be allowed in.

The class officers are also holding a contest before the dance, and the award will be a free ticket.

“Any student can enter the contest, the contest will consist of students writing down new name ideas for the Winter Formal, and the class officers will decide who will win, and the winner gets a free ticket and they get to rename Winter Formal,” Baryon said.

More details about this contest will be posted closer to the date of the dance.

Winter Formal isn’t the only thing the only big event the junior class officers are planning, they also have to organize Prom as well.

This dance is a good opportunity for students to have fun and mingle at a school event, it is also a great way to raise money for Prom. The money earned from Winter Formal will be put into planning Prom, so the more tickets that are sold, the more money the officers have to make prom a great experience in April.

The Sophomore and Junior class officers are working hard to make this dance a good experience for the students who decide to attend it.

The official date of the dance will be Saturday, February 1st from 7:30 to 10:30.  More information, including ticket sales, themes and other details about Winter Formal will be announced closer to the date of the dance.

The students and staff members organizing this event hope all students come and support by attending the Winter Formal this year!
