Chapell Roan is an American pop star who started gaining popularity from opening Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘GUTS’ tour.
She is a positive role model because she is so comfortable in herself and shows so much confidence in her outfits, sexuality and personality.
When performing or attending events, she dresses up in maximalist outfits that hint at her sexuality. Her outfits are what helped her gain her popularity among Generation Z to the point where she headlined at the 2024 COACHELLA Music festival. She wore a butterfly-inspired outfit to end her final set. She is all about eccentricity, authenticity, glitter, sequins, big hair and big makeup.
Most of her fan base is kids ranging from high school, college and even adults in the LGBTQ+ community. This is her target audience for her explicit, sapphic, women-loving-women music.
You can see her songs trending on TikTok with women lip-syncing and touring their dorm rooms to the song “Red Wine Supernova”. Or storytimes about an openly gay woman being with a closeted woman and how destructive it is in the song “Good Luck Babe.” You can see Chappel Roan teaching her dance to the song “HOT TO GO ” at concerts, or videos about confusing low-key situationships in the song, “Casual”.
No matter what your scenario is, she has a song for you to connect with. Young girls that are stuck in a confused sexuality have a sense of belonging in this world when they listen to her music.
Since she gained popularity from opening for Rodrigo’s tour and her music is very explicit for Rodrigo’s young audience, controversy struck. At the beginning of the tour, parents complained about the inappropriate language and scenes of Chappell Roan’s set and wanted her removed from the tour. However this isn’t fair, because think about how many heterosexual artists do the same in their shows and no one bats an eye. Olivia Rodrigo also went through a “rebranding” and does some suggestive moves and sings graphic lyrics with revealing clothes and parents still bought the tickets and took their children to see the concert.
With this controversy, I do believe it is too explicit for some audiences to be listening to without clearance beforehand. Parents with young children should research concerts’ openers and the performers themselves before buying tickets and then decide if it’s appropriate for their children and take responsibility for their actions and stop blaming the artist.
With Chappell Roan’s eccentric style, comes some very revealing clothing, and parents of the show even complained about that. I do agree that she does need to dress for the audience she is performing for. Not all outfits she wore were inappropriate, but some do need a little looked over. The outfits she wore for COACHELLA were perfect for the festival, but not for the concert. But again, parents should research before bringing their children to certain events and festivals.
Chapell Roan is a fantastic role model for young teenage girls who are looking for a way to discover themselves.
