Friday, January 17, Freya Skye released her newest single and music video, ‘Just Can’t Fake It.’ The upbeat pop song is about a breakup. Skye also wrote the song herself.
At a glance, the song is about a breakup. When taking a deeper dive, it’s more about not wanting to fake a relationship but missing the way things used to be. Many of the lyrics are about being angry about how the relationship went as shown in lines such as “I’m not even sad about it, maybe just bitter?” and “Can’t let you go and it’s so frustrating.”
The song itself is not bad overall. It has a catchy and attention-grabbing tune and the singing is very well done. There are a few downfalls to the song, though. This is a song being put out into the over-saturated category of breakup songs. This song lacks something unique to set it apart from other break-up songs, which would cause people to listen to other songs that hold something more unique.
Another issue is that the song feels very ambiguous. This can be good or bad. When it’s so ambiguous, you can connect to it more when it’s broad. At the same time, it makes it less interesting when you get less details. I personally enjoy when songs have a much deeper meaning when you take a deeper look into the words.
There’s a line in the bridge of the song, “This never-ending story,” which feels emulated throughout the entirety of the song. Normally I hate when songs feel too repetitive, but having some repetition works for this song. She literally says it is a never-ending story, which keeps repeating itself.
The first time I watched the music video, I was confused. The music video has Freya in an office, answering phone calls, standing around a printer, and doing ‘office activities’ while singing. Later in the song, she begins making a mess of papers and dancing around with her friends. The reason it confused me at first was because I thought, “What does dancing in an office have to do with a breakup song?”
I took a deeper dive and watched it again and I was able to make some more connections. I think the idea behind the music video is that the relationship itself felt like work to her, hence the office space and doing office activities.
As the video progresses, she begins making a mess of the office space and having fun because she decides to let loose and move on from the relationship. There may be another hidden meaning behind it, and everyone may interpret it differently, so you can watch it for yourself and decide the meaning on YouTube.
Overall, I think the song is good, especially for Skye being only 15 years old and still starting her career. She shows real promise in the industry, and I hope to soon see her releasing full-length albums rather than a bunch of singles.
You can give Skye’s newest single “Just Can’t Fake It” a listen on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, or by visiting her website. You can also listen to her other singles on those same platforms, and keep an eye out for her in ‘Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampire,’ which will come to Disney+ sometime this year.
If you wanna catch her live, Skye will be touring with the Descendants Zombies Worlds Collide Tour from July 17 to September 16 across the United States. They will be in Cincinnati at the Heritage Bank Center on August 10, in Columbus at the Schottenstein Center on August 12 and in Cleveland at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse August 13.
