Former President Donald Trump was arrested on charges of business fraud, election interference and more than 40 counts of withholding confidential defense documents. The problem is that he is running again for President in 2024 and there is nothing stopping him from running. This has never happened. A president has never had criminal charges at the same time as running for election.
There is a movement to disqualify him from the ballot in part to there being nothing in the Constitution stopping him. The only way to stop him is through the Supreme Court. Many people in the country still support Trump and would like him back in office in the upcoming election.
He has just pleaded not guilty at the Fulton County Courthouse on charges of racketeering which is the charge for interference in the 2020 presidential election. Many people have been wanting a trial for the election in 2020 and for inciting a riot on Jan. 6, 2021 where his supporters stormed the United States Capitol Building to overturn the election from the previous year.
Many news companies have bashed the former President for his actions. Rightfully so because he has tried desperately to overturn the election for two plus years now. There are thoughts that he can pardon himself or have someone pardon him for the charges pressed against him which seems insanely sketchy. There is currently nothing in the Constitution that can stop him from this.
Many news outlets think that he will “Fire Smith, the prosecutor, and just pardon himself if he is elected,” (The Guardian).
This is a possibility because we have seen something occur like this before with former President Nixon. His vice president Gerald Ford pardoned him after Nixon resigned in 1974 to clear him of any wrongdoing. With many in the republican party still favoring him, this is a possible reality we may face in the upcoming months.
People still think Trump has a massive shot to win the nomination and his trials. He is still a massive topic in the Republican debate and many still support him. It has been surveyed that “Trump has a massive lead over the rest of the field and leads at 62% support,” (CBS). This shows that he is a massive favorite to win the nomination for the upcoming election.
This also shows that we need massive reforms in how we nominate candidates because he is still eligible to run as his trial commences. It does not matter only if he wins the nod but what can happen if he does win.
