As the annual Homecoming dance approaches, many students at Westerville North find themselves thinking about their plans for the night. However, there have been a few new events this year that students will find may make the planning process a little easier and less stressful.
One of these events is a homecoming formal footwear drive run by the Young Feminists Club. The idea behind this drive was for students to donate their gently used footwear to be set out in the commons for other students to take if they need shoes or heels.
Señora Henman, the advisor for the Young Feminists Club stated that formal footwear can often be pricey as well as single use. “It seemed silly to spend a lot of money on something that’s barely used and then get rid of it or resell or throw it out,” Henman said.
There were over a hundred shoes that were donated for the students to look through. There were also contributions by the community “We got a giant donation from the group called Fairy Goodmothers which is a huge organization in the area that does the same thing but on a huge basis,” Henman said.
Through this drive, students could relieve some stress about expensive footwear as well as be more environmentally friendly by reducing waste.
Henman is also the advisor for the student section leaders. She described some initiatives on their end. This includes an advisory door decorating contest and various themes for homecoming spirit week.
These efforts were to make homecoming more accessible to other students by drawing focus away from just the football game and dance which may not grab everyone’s interest.
