School dances happen all the time, but who is behind that fairytale scene? Class officers! A class officer is someone who shows leadership, noticing what needs to be done and having a positive attitude for their class. A class officer must get elected by their peers after submitting a video. The students pick their favorite nominee by the video.
One of the sophomore class officers, Issac Cofie (2026), explains why he thinks his classmates chose him as a class officer. “I show leadership, give good advice and am respectful,” Cofie said.
Class officers take on responsibilities like setting up for the blood drive at school, choosing a homecoming and a prom theme, a winter formal theme for everyone to dress up to and so much more. A junior class officer, Diaga Mbouge (2025), shares some of the responsibilities they take on.
“We are making sure students are doing the right thing,” Mbouge said.
Michaela Baum and Kristen Whiddon have been class officer advisors for the past two years. They go over all of the students’ work and strive to make each class officer a leader. “[I like] providing students with a space to work, [allowing them to] take charge of their class, making sure they have dates set for bigger events and also making sure the class officers are there and doing their role.”
Their first year they were figuring out the ropes and how to book different things to make students have a fun time doing these activities. Bahm talks through some of the things they had to learn as class officer advisors.
“[We had to] figure out how to book a DJ, make sure they have enough drinks for different events and have decorations.” Baum said. The advisors are treating this year differently by branching out and providing more leadership opportunities.
This year’s senior class officers put together senior movie night, graduation speeches, yellow rose ceremony speeches, skip days and so many more activities to make the seniors have the best last year of highschool. Officer Kennedy Easter (2024) talks about some senior activities they set up for the seniors.
“One coming up is the senior murals where the seniors get to make their own painting for five dollars each,” Easter said.
Baum explains how the officers are meeting with different schools and providing leadership opportunities at an upcoming Columbus Blue Jackets game so they can learn some management and also stay to watch the game in December.
“I’m not a blue jackets fan but I am definitely excited to meet new students.” Mbouge said.
Easter also comments on the trip. “I am excited that I’m gonna be doing a lot of leadership activities.” Easter said.
Juggling being a class officer with everyday life can definitely be hard. Easter explains how she handles it. “Advisory helps a lot [with time management], meeting after school and using a planner helps too,” Easter said.
Class officers do so many things, but what is the overall goal?
“I want to leave an impact at our school and to look back and say I did something,” Mbouge said.
Easter feels similarly. “I want everyone to have a good senior year and to have everyone look back and say that was the best last year of high school,” Easter said.
