At Westerville North, pride in clubs and sports echoes throughout the halls, but for sophomore Addison Marinelli (’28), that energy is more than just background noise. Marinelli, a student known for her enthusiasm and school spirit, reflects the best of what Westerville North stands for. From jumping on broken bleachers during football games to spending a day with the special education programs, she embodies the school’s culture of involvement and kindness. For her, being part of the Warrior community isn’t just about cheering at games, it’s about helping build the supportive environment around her.
“I want to show everyone my abilities,” Marinelli says. “I’m on the soccer team, basketball team, softball team, W.A.L.T member, Warrior Way Leadership member, choir, class officer, and I play club sports. It’s definitely a lot but I’ve always wanted people to see my worth.” Clearly Marinelli is very heavily involved and cares for her school in many different ways.
From a young age Marinelli says her parents have always pushed her to do her best in academics and in extracurriculars like sports. Now that she is involved in all of these things it’s on her to get the job done, and she definitely has lots to be proud of. At the end of last year she was 4th in her class and currently has a 4.7 GPA with 3 varsity letters on her jacket.
All of this hard work definitely doesn’t come easy for her. “I definitely feel stressed out and overwhelmed with everything I have with school and sports,” Marinelli says.
Despite her busy schedule, she admits that the pressure often comes from inside the most. When she doesn’t perform her best, whether it’s on the field or in the classroom, she tends to be her own toughest critic.
“ I feel just really mad at myself because I know I can do so much better,” she says. “But in the moment, I don’t think about how much work I’ve actually put into it.”
This feeling isn’t unique to Addison.
Many students at Westerville North feel similar pressure, especially those involved in advanced classes and multiple activities. Principal Kurt Yancey says he sees this play out everyday. “They take care of business first,” Yancey says.
Students like Marinelli, who take on challenging classes while staying invested in sports and leadership roles, are often the ones trying the hardest to keep everything in order.
“I just think they are really good at balancing it,” Yancey says about students in AP and Honors classes. He explains that students like Marinelli, who challenge themselves in multiple ways, often push the hardest. And it’s not because anyone tells them to, but because they want to succeed in everything they’re part of.
Yancey also says that this drive to participate and be involved is also what fuels the strong student spirit at Westerville North. He explained that last year’s winter sport season, especially the boys basketball team’s run to the state championship, showed just how committed students are.

“I think it definitely helped,” says Yancy when talking about how he personally thought the support helped the boys basketball team succeed. The student section had been loud all year, but as the team kept winning, the energy grew even bigger.
“Even at the final four everybody was so fired up for those kids. It was amazing,” Yancey says. He remembers how students packed the stands, dressed in theme, and cheered till they lost their voices.
When the playoff games moved further away, the school organized spirit buses so students could still support their team. The buses always filled quickly with students who wanted to be a part of something exciting.
This kind of atmosphere is something that Marinelli says motivates her, too. Whether it’s on the field, in leadership clubs, in the classrooms, or in the stands cheering for other teams, she’s there.
Marinelli’s story isn’t just about balancing sports, school, and leadership, it’s about the impact one student can have on a community. Her drive, her spirit, and her willingness to push herself reflect the heart of Westerville North. And as the cheers echo through the halls and across the fields, Addison Marinelli continues to show what it truly means to be a Warrior.
