Plane crash stuns viewers of Michigan air show

News footage captures the plane on its way down. Spectators stand by in shock.

On Aug. 12, 2023 around 4 p.m., one of the jets crashed during the Thunder Over Michigan air show. According to the Detroit Press, one of the pilots noticed that the jet was running out of power, so the two pilots ejected just before the plane started going down.

This was a Cold War-era fighter jet, so there were only two seats. The two people who were able to safely eject were the only people in the jet. The main pilot, the owner of the jet, has serious injuries. However, none were life threatening. He was one of the only people to sustain any injuries. No pedestrians were struck by the plane or fire.

According to USA Today, the jet crashed into vacant vehicles in the parking lot at the Lake Apartment Complex. There were multiple eyewitnesses of the accident that were left speechless from watching the jet go down. Some social media posts gave immediate first hand reactions to the crash.

One video that was circulating on Instagram and Twitter shows how it affected the people recording and watching the jet go down. One woman was hyperventilating and the people around her were trying to calm her down, but they were also in a funk because they didn’t expect to see a jet go down in front of them.
